The College of William & Mary

The College of William & Mary, also known as William and Mary or W&M, is one of eight “Public Ivy” schools in the United States, so called because here students acquire exceptional education at a reasonable price. Founded in 1693 by a charter issued by King William III and Queen Mary II of England, it is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States after Harvard University.

U.S. Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler were educated at W&M, as well as other key figures important to the development of the nation, such as U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall, Speaker of the House Henry Clay, sixteen members of the Continental Congress and four signers of the Declaration of Independence.

William and Mary was designated the first university in the United States when the graduate programs in law and medicine were added in 1779. It was also the first to install an honor code of conduct for students.

In addition to its undergraduate curriculum, which includes an international joint degree program with the University of St. Andrews and a joint engineering program with Columbia University, W&M is home to several graduate programs, including computer science, public policy, physics and colonial history, plus four professional schools: law, business, education and marine science.

The Capitol

After the capital of Virginia was relocated to Williamsburg from Jamestown in 1699, the General Assembly convened in the House of Burgesses at the Capitol. The foundations of the original building were laid in 1701, but two Capitol buildings served the colony on the same site: the first from 1705 until its destruction by fire in 1747, and the second from 1753 to 1780, at which time Virginia’s government was moved to Richmond. The earlier Capitol was reconstructed in the 1930s as part of the Colonial Williamsburg restoration.

The Governor's Place

Home to seven royal governors, the Governor’s Palace in Williamsburg, Virginia, was also the official residence of two post-colonial governors, Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson, before the capital of Virginia was moved to Richmond in 1780. The main house burned down in 1781 but was reconstructed on the original site, along with its outbuildings, during the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg in the 1930s.

Travis Brust, Executive Chef at the Williamsburg Inn

Travis Brust began cooking in a small Italian family restaurant in New York at the age of 14. Later, Brust became an American Culinary Federation Culinary Apprentice at The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel™ in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire. During his four years at the Balsams Grand Resort, Brust traveled in the off seasons to many other high-ranking resorts in the country, including the Wigwam in Phoenix, to hone his craft. Amongst the resorts he travelled to, including the Williamsburg Inn in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he was asked to come back after graduation as a rounds cook and worked his way up through the ranks over the next few years until being named Executive Chef in 2010.
